Manna Dey was one of the greatest playback singer in Indian film history. His real name was Prabodh Chandra Dey. He born in 1st May 1919 in Kolkata.


Manna Dey started taking music lessons from Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan. In 1942 he went to Bombay and began filling in as a partner music chief under Sachin Dev Burman. Next to his employment he began take melodic lessons in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.

He appeared in the film Tamanna in 1942, by the tune “Upar Gagan Bishal” formed by his uncle K.C. Dey. He got to be distinctly well known after the arrival of Do Bigha Zamin in 1953. Where two of the tunes sung by him and made by Salil Choudhury. Letter he worked with Shankar-Jaikishan in Awara, Boot Polish, Shree 420, Chori, Mera Naam Joker and numerous more movies. Alongside Hindi motion pictures he likewise sang in Bhojpuri, Magadhi, Maithili, Punjabi, Assamese, Odia, Konkani, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Nepali films.

He got many honors in his profession. He got National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1968 and in 1971 for the motion picture Mera Naam Joker. In 2005 he got Lifetime Achievement grant by the Government of Maharashtra and in 2011 he got Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. On 24th October 2013 he passed on of a heart failure.
